[ARCHIVED] FH Unveils New Surveillance Cameras, Part of Crime-Fighting Initiative

Forest Heights, Md. – The Town of Forest Heights rolled out the final cameras in the first phase of it surveillance camera program with the most recent four cameras placed at the main access points to the Town at Comanche, Seneca, Talbert and Shawnee drives.

SeeView Security was contracted by Forest Heights to get the cameras up and running, which are high-resolution cameras that have infrared and night vision capabilities, and can zoom in on a license plate clearly.

“The Town of Forest Heights is taking a proactive stance in an effort to give our police department an additional tool in helping to solve crimes committed within the Town’s limits,” said Councilman Robert Barnes. “These cameras are not meant to replace officers, but to enhance their ability to solve crimes. This is a massive project that will take a number of years to complete. With the casino coming to the area in the near future, I think this is a beneficial project, and I only hope the next administration can see our vision and follow our lead.”

The cameras and equipment were paid for using the Town’s speed camera funds. Taxpayer money was not used, and will not be used for future camera purchases.

“The cameras have already proven to be an effective crime-fighting tool and have assisted both the Prince George’s County Police and Forest Heights Police Department in suspect identification,” said Cpl. Calvin Washington. “We are very pleased with the progress that we have been making in our commitment toward protecting the public.”

Town officials hope to have a total of 22 cameras installed with subsequent phases to follow. For the second phase, the Town will place four more cameras near its elementary schools and local parks.

The Town of Forest Heights comprises approximately 2,500 residents and 945 homes that straddle both sides of Maryland Route 210, and is located near the Capital Beltway, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and National Harbor.
