[ARCHIVED] Recycling Contest - Recycling Right Can Pay Off Big for Prince George's Residents

LARGO, MD - In conjunction with America Recycles Day, the Prince George’s County Department of Environmental Resources (DER) will conduct a Countywide Recycle Right Contest from November 15, 2013 through December 6, 2013.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage residential recycling and to recognize participants for recycling correctly. County citizens and residents may participate in the contest by placing their properly prepared recycling carts/bins at the curb on their regularly scheduled collection days during the three-week contest period.

“By recycling right, residents limit the amount of waste that goes to our landfills,” says DER Director Adam Ortiz. “Recycling right is not only the right green thing to do; it’s a win for our environment.”

Staff from DER’s Recycling Section will judge the recycling carts/bins on randomly selected streets/blocks and a winner will be selected from each Council District. The criteria for selecting the winners will include having the arrow on the cart lids and lift bars facing the street, placement of recycling containers at the curb, material preparation, cleanliness, the absence of unacceptable items and the variety of materials included for recycling.

The winners will receive prizes donated by DER and the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments. If the winners are not at home at the time of selection, they will be notified by mail.
